You may have heard about the new Wegman’s coming to Cary, NC. You might have even read that it’s not just the grocery store, but also several surrounding restaurants and businesses. But have you heard the details? Check out Fenton, the new-age urban center that’s coming to Cary!
Fenton Cary: A New-Age Urban Live-Work-Play Experience
Anchored by the popular Wegmans Food Market, Fenton is the latest in new-age development in the Triangle. Featuring a plethora of retail and services, high-end condos and apartments, office spaces, two hotels, and even community spaces and parks, Fenton is the new North Hills-esk outdoor-shopping experience of Raleigh.
Exactly What’s Coming to Fenton Cary
Fenton aims to bring an urban vibe to suburban Cary by creating a walkable downtown scene of street-level restaurants, stores, and services with luxury residences and office space above. Over 2.5 million square feet of office space, 900 luxury condos, two boutique hotels, 400 square feet of specialty retail, and even a boutique movie theatre with drinks and dining services are already planned.
Other Businesses That Could Make an Appearance
So far, Wegman’s is the only official. But there have been talks of other big-name favorites like Filson, Levi’s, Patagonia, Toms, Warby Parker, Bonobos, or Cuyana. There will also be a focus on health-based businesses like yoga, pilates, and indoor cycling studios, as well as gyms or fitness centers. And chain food restaurants are out, chef-driven concept eateries are in.
Construction & Timeline of Fenton
Construction of Fenton will be completed in 5 phases, with Phase 1 planned for completion in 2020 and the final Phase 5 wrapping up around 2024. It will be based around an L-shaped main street surrounded by businesses and retails spaces. Lots of pedestrian corridors will make it easy to get from businesses to the six community spaces also planned for the development. Eight parking decks will sit behind businesses to minimize the need for parallel parking.
And for those of you familiar with the area, yes, that odd little unfinished road currently sticking off Cary Towne Boulevard will become one of the main thoroughfares of Fenton and connect up to East Chatham Street.
The Impact of Fenton Cary
Fenton will change the shopping experience of Cary, creating a vibrant downtown urban center in a community that’s decidedly suburban. Plans for connections to nearby greenways, as well as bus rapid transit service and a pedestrian bridge to Cary Towne Center, will help make the area more commutable for those without cars. And most importantly, the project is projected to create over 19,000 jobs and have a total economic impact of over $1.2 billion ($7.7 in tax revenue).
