Moving to Raleigh or the Triangle area from out of state? Here’s what you need to know to get ready for life in a brand-new place!
Life is Good in the Triangle!
In case you haven’t already heard, we’ve got it pretty good here in Raleigh. We’ve got lots to do, beautiful parks, great food, fantastic events, top-rated schools, and highly affordable homes. And even though our winters are short and mild, we still get all four seasons. What more could you want?
There Are Plenty of Ways to Get Outside
Think life in a big city means you’re urban-locked all the time? Not so in Raleigh. In fact, this city is home to over 9,000 acres of parkland and 1,300 acres of water! From the woods and miles of trails of Umstead State Park to the vast waters of Jordan Lake, there are so many ways to get outside and enjoy our beautiful weather.
Getting Active is Easy, Too
Whether you’re into hiking, biking, tennis, golf, crossfit, BMX biking, or something else entirely, we’ve got plenty of options to keep you entertained. Explore miles of greenway trails by foot or bike. Hike the Neuse River Trail or the American Tobacco Trail. Practice your game at Cary Tennis Park or your swing at TPC Wakefield Plantation. Take fitness, yoga, martial arts, or dance classes through the Parks and Rec department. And yes, we do have a BMX track.
Staying Healthy is a Breeze
We’ve got some of the best medical care and facilities in the country. In the Triangle alone you’ll find top hospital and health care systems like WakeMed, Rex Healthcare, and Duke University Healthcare.
Educational Opportunities Abound
For kids, we’ve got the top-rated and high-performing Wake County Public School System, the largest district in the state. We’ve also got a ton of charter, magnet, and independent schools, and more than our share of private schools.
For young adults and those of us considering some later-in-life education, there’s not just the three big universities (NC State, Duke, and UNC), but also smaller private schools like Meredith College, Peace College, Shaw University, and St. Augustine’s College, and the public Wake Tech Community College and Durham Tech Community College.
And Employment Opportunities Are A-Plenty
If you’re looking for a fresh start or maybe a career advancement, the Triangle is the place to find it! We’ve got huge opportunities in professional and technical services, health care, and wholesale trade. Three universities provide even more opportunities in various fields. And the Research Triangle Park is home to major international and national companies, like IBM, RTI International, GlaxoSmithKline, and many more.
We’ve Got About a Million Things to Do
Arts, theatre, culture, museums, nightlife, events; you name it, we’ve got it. Explore the stores and restaurants of Downtown Raleigh (or hang out after the lights go out for a little nightlife). Visit the NC Museum of Natural Science, Art, or History. Bring the kids to the Marbles Kids Museum. Discover the natural wonders of the JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State. Shop local and fresh at the State Farmers Market or the big brands at Crabtree Valley Mall. Experience theatre, opera, dance, ballet, or music at Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts. And don’t miss out on any of Raleigh’s top events, like First Fridays, the NC State Fair, or the Saturday Flea Market.
…And We’ve Got Sports
Pro sports, college sports, heated rivalries… are you ready for game night? The PNC Arena is the home ice of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes. And WakeMed Soccer Park you can catch a Carolina Railhawks soccer match. And don’t forget all the local colleges—football at NC State, basketball at Duke and UNC…
